Treasure Valley Livestock Auction Hosts $25,000 Fund-Raiser Caldwell, Idaho (April 2, 2008) – Treasure Valley Livestock Auction (TVLA), located in Caldwell, Idaho, along with the Oregon Livestock Producers Association (OLPA), recently sponsored yet another roll-over calf and cull cow auction for R-CALF USA that generated $25,000 for the only national organization fighting to protect both independent U.S. cattle producers and consumers. Ron Davison and Bill Davison own the sale barn and have hosted R-CALF USA fund-raisers for many, many years. Several generous individuals donated cattle to be auctioned off, and TVLA kindly offered to donate half of its commission from the entire day’s sale. “We’re so appreciative of what the Davisons do for their cattle-producer customers,” said R-CALF USA Region I Director Margene Eiguren. Region I includes the states of Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho and Montana. “When we express our gratitude to Treasure Valley for supporting U.S. cattle producers, they respond by saying they know that the viability of their business depends on cattle producers. R-CALF USA is especially grateful because it’s difficult to find sale barns willing to take a stand for their cattle-producer customers. “The success of the event also was due to the generosity of producers and businesses that came and bid on the calf, as well as the many producers who donated cattle to the sale,” she continued. “I did a little calling around asking producers to commit cattle to the sale, and they certainly pulled through for R-CALF.” All of the proceeds from the event will help R-CALF USA in its fight to overturn the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) OTM (over-30-month) Rule that allows into the United States from Canada cattle older than 30 months of age, as well as beef products from Canadian cattle of any age. Canada continues to have a growing problem with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). In her comments to the crowd, Eiguren pointed out that an equal – or even bigger – threat to independent U.S. cattle producers and feeders is the proposal by Brazilian-owned JBS-S.A. to purchase National Beef Packing, Smithfield Foods beef group, which would make JBS the largest meatpacker in the U.S. and the world. JBS also hopes to purchase Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feeding, with a one-time capacity of 811,000 head. “R-CALF USA will be engaged with the Justice Department to do everything possible to block that purchase, due to the threat it poses to the eradication of competition in our U.S. markets, as well as because this proposed acquisition is a threat to our national sovereignty,” Eiguren emphasized. The following ranchers stepped to the plate and donated cattle, which helped to make this fund-raiser a huge success: Kirk and Andre Scown, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Keith and Janice Easterday, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Tom and Linda McElroy, Vale, Ore.; Robert Corbari, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Dowell Brothers, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Elias and Inez Jaca, Nampa, Idaho; Martin and Susan Jaca, Melba, Idaho; Norm and Judi Easterday, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Cliff and Alice Gunderson, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Larry and Susan Otley, Princeton, Ore.; Nancy and Forest Fretwell, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Wayne and Midge Smith, Burns, Ore.; Bob, Ryan and Josh Bruce, Bruce Ranch, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Jennie Otley, Riddle Ranch, Princeton, Ore.; Grenke Brothers, Jordan Valley, Ore.; William and Nita Lowry, LU Ranch, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Jerry and Linda Miller, Crane, Ore.; Richard and Marcia Eiguren, Arock, Ore.; Robert and Terri Fretwell, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Lequerica Brothers, Arock, Ore.; Richard and Margene Eiguren, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Mike and Robbin Eiguren, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Jason and Jane Eiguren, Jordan Valley, Ore.; Martin and Shirley Andre, Crowley, Ore.
